What the MOT checks.

The test follows the same national rules at every test centre. It checks the car is safe and legal on the day; it isn’t a service, so nothing is taken apart.

  • Lights, indicators and reflectors
  • Brakes, and how evenly they pull
  • Tyres and wheels, including tread depth
  • Steering and suspension
  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Exhaust, fuel system and emissions
  • Body and structure, for rust and sharp edges
  • Horn, mirrors and doors
  • Registration plates and the vehicle identification number

When it’s due, and if it fails.

Due

Three years after the car was first registered, then every year. Book up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and you keep the same renewal date.

If it fails

Dangerous or major faults fail the test; minor faults and advisories are listed to keep an eye on. We show you what failed and call with a price for the repair.

The retest

Leave the car with us for the repair and the partial retest within 10 working days is free. Bring it back by the end of the next working day and some items, such as lamps, mirrors and tyres, are retested free.

From GOV.UK’s rules for every MOT test centre, checked 29 October 2026.

How booking in works.

Three steps, and a phone call before any work.

  1. Step 1: Drop it off

Bring the car in from 8am and leave the keys at the desk.

  2. Step 2: We call with a price

We look first, then ring you with a price. No work starts without your say-so.

  3. Step 3: Collect

We text you when it is ready. Pay at the desk and drive away.

MOT questions.

Dates, prices, fails and retests.

When is my first MOT due?

Three years after the car was first registered, then once a year. Your MOT certificate shows the date the current one runs out.

How early can I get an MOT?

Up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out, and you keep the same renewal date. Earlier than that and the new date runs from the test.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

We show you what failed and call with a price for the repairs. If the car stays with us for the repair and is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. That is GOV.UK’s rule for every test centre.

Can I drive away if it fails?

Only if your current MOT is still valid and nothing was marked dangerous. Otherwise the car needs repairing before it goes back on the road, so we talk you through the options first.

What does an MOT cost?

Our MOT is £45 for a car. The most any test centre can charge for a car is £54.85, set by the government.

Due an MOT?

Choose your service, pick a day and drop it off from 8am.

Bayline Autocentre is a fictional garage, so this button doesn't place a call. On a real website it would ring the workshop on 0161 496 0270.
